I used to make witchcraft a big part of my content, now I keep it mostly private but I'm not scared to talk about it. People Have no Power over You One thing I see all the the time is "Don't talk about your practice publicly. Don't show your altar, don't share this this or this! Someone could hex it!" Yes, they could. But I also don't give anyone that kind of power over me. Sure a hex could work, but if I absorb it and fear it, then it becomes powerful. People only have what power over you that you give them. And we give people and spirits way too much power way too often. You Don't Need Expensive Tools or Props It's cool to have the fanciest candle sets, and Tarot cards, herbs, setups and everything. I've seen some tik tok witches that practically lived in cabins in the woods. The problem is, that stuff is really expensive, and takes up a lot of space. I live in a house of about 800 square feet. My wife is Catholic and we are self employed so our budget can be limited. The Truth is, you don't need all of that stuff. There is just as much magic and mystery in any rock you pick up off the ground as there is a fancy Crystal bought from a witchy store. Same with a cool stick you find. I do have a cool walking stick I got as a gift a few years ago but its also a mobility aid. I'd be just as happy with a large tree branch, but not sure they'd let me into places walking around with a huge tree stick/staff. Getting a cool tool from time to time isn't wrong or bad at all. Just don't feel like you have to have this stuff or that you're less of a witch because you can't afford the latest new witchy trend. Your Mind is your Most Powerful Tool One thing I've learned in my own practice is to not understimate the power of my own mind. Going into meditative trances, its like a psychic door opens and communication with the spirit world begins. Sometimes its weird visions I can't make heads or tales of, sometimes its a clear message of soemthing I need to do, or a warning for someone else. it is during these times I also use mantras and chants to cast spells. Focusing my mind into the trance state, I put into that mental portal what I want to happen, my goals, my manifestations and such and let the universe work its magic. It sounds quite simple and it can be, but it also takes a LOT of concentration. Its about more than just quieting your mind. It's about centering yourself with the universe, while opening up your third eye so you are able to recieve and send. Imagine like as you mediate, an invisible door in your brain opens up and a psychic antenna emerges. That antenna can send and receive the universe's message. I want to note, if you work with deities, it works the same way. I speak to the universe, though I used to work wtih The Morrigan and Apollo, but now I focus on eclectic practice. Once you receive these messages, I highly suggest your write them down in a journal. I suggest a paper journal with a pen, but if you want to use a computer or phone notes that is fine too. I just feel more grounded writing it out by hand, but I have used digital journals like Obsidian in the past. Its pretty user friendly and then I always have it later for reference. It takes a lot of practice and discipline. That is the gist of psychic meditation for a mental witch as I call it. There could be more, but I'm not sure how to articulate it. Other than to say, youur practice is your practice. Any book you read or influencer you follow, don't make them feel like you have to follow their rules to the letter. Humans are magical beings and the world is a magical place. There is no expensive gate you must unlock to gain access. All you have to do is open your mind, be ready and open to receive and practice practice practice. Magic is like a muscle, the more you work it the stronger it becomes. It only takes a few minutes a day. If you can meditate for hours on end, that is great, but you can accomplish quite a bit in just fifteen minutes. Once again, witchcraft isn't a contest and elder witches are not your supervisors. Unless you are in a strict coven, don't let anyone tell you how to practice. I was involved with a few online covens early on and none of that went well. I think within witchcraft, community is important, but it also isn't a team sport. Most covens I see usually blow up with drama and infighting. I am a solo witch and I have witchy friends, but no one tells me how to practice. I do have a witchy hat kind of. I did a blog about hats. I looked up witchy hats for men and all I pretty much found was fedoras (which feels douchey to me) and wizard hats. As much as I'd love to walk around with a wizard hat, I think that would draw too much unwanted attention. A witchy aesthetic isn't required, but my individual look makes me feel good, so I go with it. Once again, its all up to you how out and over the top you want to be, or do you want to be whimsical and wear bright colors. There is no real rule on this, if there is it's soemthing someone made up. I know many whimsical witches. They have a lot of fun. So, this sums up my practice and I hope it is helpful for someone. A lot of Christians who convert to witchcraft I notice bring a lot of rules and baggage with them (Looking at you Wiccans). but if they want to carry that, that is fine. But they don't get to put that on me. I had one witch tell me that some horror movies open demonic portals. That's the kindo f crap i grew up with in church. I reject that nonsens in witchcraft. Ouija boards are tools and also board games. They can do things, but they aren't inherently eveil or scary. Same with any divination tool. We just like to freak our own selves out.
