I saw the judge just declared a hung jury which is unfortunate for a lot of reasons. One thing, most of the noise about this case I see on social media people have no understanding of mental health or how the legal system actually works. Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity is not a Walk Free Card People seem to think if she's found not guilty in this case, she is going to be free to live her life free of consequences. Just like the Andrea Yates case, an eventual not guilty in Clancy's case will mean she's to be hospitalized indefinitely. I think this is the best outcome. We are talking about a seriously ill person who did something horrific. Nothing is served by throwing her in prison for the rest of her life. My undersanding is Massachussetes doesn't have the death penalty any longer, so people screaming for her death are out of luck. She she would likely go to a state hospital probably for the rest of her life, if not well into her old age. Those are hardly country clubs anyway, they are for the most sick people in the state, but at least there she would get the proper treatment she never got on hte outsid. Mental Illness is Complicated A lot of poeple don't know this, I worked for 6 years as a local corrections officer years ago and then 6 more years in a psychiatric hospital. I worked with acute inpatients and adolescents. There is a lot of factors involved. The most disturbing case I had waswhen I worked for the city police in Indiana. I booked in a guy who was a schizophrenia patient. He had just gotten out of a recent hospitalization. He got in an argument with his sister in law, strangled her and then dismembered her body. The whole time I was processing him, he bragged about all the blood and the way he carved her up. The booking area is all on video, so I just didn't say anything since I wasn't a sworn officer and just let him talk, and then turned the tape in to evidence. Detectives talked to him also and they were bothered buy him. He ended up getting sentenced to life in prison without parole. His lack of remorse was a big factor. Two things can be true at once, a person can be severely mentally ill and they can be a sociopath. I think that was the case here. In the psych hospital, we worked with a lot of moms with post partum depression and psychosis. None of them hurt their children, but some had gotten violent with other people. Once they were properly medicated they did fine going forward but many came back due to the lack of a support system at home. I don't know much about Clancy's husband. People are arguing he's the one who killed the kids and framed her, or he put her on the meds to make her crazy. Maybe all that is true, maybe not. I'm just looking at the facts I'm aware of and acting on that. Whatever happened, the system and community greatly failed Lindsay Clancy and her children paid the price. All that said, I don't think her husband is without responsibility here. His wife is likely severely mentally ill, was begging for help and was a danger to herself and others and he did nothing. He is not without culpability and I don't know enough about Mass. law to know if he could be charged with something or not. The fact he already has another girlfriend or wife (not sure which) doesn't look great. The problem with cases like this is that it invokes a lot of emotion and rightly so. But the courts don't work off emotion. They have laws and proecedures and we need that. I saw one person in the Casey Anthony case say her lawyer should be charged for having her plead not guilty. That's not how this works. No one is required to plead guilty or incriminate themselves. I blame conservatives for defunding our schools for so long. Some people don't undertand double jeopardy is not trigged by a mistrial. She can be tried again and likely will be. I understand people are upset children were killed. It is a horrific thing to have happened. But this is why we have our system and not social media or mob justice. So people can get a fair trial and not tried on rumor or speculation. The system is far from perfect and it is full of bias and corruption, but that doesn't mean we toss the whole thing out and just fry everyone accused of a crime. We have to look at the facts of the case and the jury has to rule on the actual facts of what actually happened. Not what the internet thinks someone was thinking. Anyway, that's my thoughts. When I worked with mentally ill patients, we had them all over the spectrum. One patient was an Amish man who had murdered his wife about 20 years before. He was from Pennsylvania and was severely schizophrenic. But his church thought he was demon possessed and that having a family would be God's will for him. So they got him married to a girl in their community. A year or so later in a psychotic fit, he stabbed her to death. He spent 20 years in a hospital and then was staying at a halfway house near our facility. He came on our unit for some med adjustments and talking to him was heartbreaking. He felt horrible about the thoughts he had but had no idea how to stop it. He didn't understand why God did this to him and understood it wasn't demons, but his brain wasn't working right. One cool thing, I took him to the court yard and taught him how to throw a football. He was really tickled at how hard he could throw it once he got the technique down, he almost knocked the wind out of me at one point. The point I'm making in all this is mental illness doesn't look the same across the board. And some people can be mentally ill and be bad people, but that looks a certain way. Psychotic episodes look another way. So many supposed mental health advocates on social media want to see Lindsay hang because they only support fun and quirky mental illness that leads to shopping sprees or dying your hair. When it gets to scary things like intrusive thoughts, self harm or harming others, then their support stops. But these are the people we need to protect the most.
