A Day at the Library
Seeking quiet at a library across town turns into a full sensory obstacle course. A slice-of-life dispatch covering forgotten earbuds, vintage Spirit Halloween memories, and people-watching far from home on the South Side.
I don't go to the library often enough. Today I went because my wife had a long court session today in Leon Valley and the library is next door so I camped out here with my laptop and kindle. I want to read but not really in a reading headspace just yet. Also I thought libraries were suppose to be quiet.
The people around me are quiet, but in a farther corner people including the librarians are talking really loudly. It's days like this I wish I brough my earbuds with me. Being neurodivergent, listening to music helps me drown out the obnoxious noise that makes me anxious. So I can work or write meaningless blogs.
Its about 102 out today in mid-September. I was Spirit Halloween is open nearby and I usually stop in there a few times a year, but they have really lost their magic for me. Over the years, their prices have gone up and up and up and quality has gone down down down.
Last year we got a better haul at Five below and target than we did at Spirit. Maybe other places are just catching up, but the quality of items was much better. Though as I get older I try to do my own art and decorations and dig through stuff from previous years. I try not to be over consumerist, but it can be tricky when there are so many cool new things.
But yeah maybe its because the kids are grown. When they were little, I'd love going with them to Spirit Halloween and see their faces when they saw all the costumes and decorations. One year Josh was dancing to Wham! by himself in the back of the store wearing some guns on his arm and just having a good old time. I won't post the video I took so not to embarass him, but it was a good memory. Without kids, it feels weird being a 52 yr old man just walking around Spirit Halloween all by myself.
A lot of times when my wife is in court, I'll just sit in the car and break out my laptop or read on my kindle. Sometimes I even take a nap. But when its as hot as today, the car AC doesn't feel like its doing much and she has a big docket today and it would wast lot of gas for me to sit there for 3 hours with the car running.
So here I am in the library. I will say this branch is much fancier than ours on the South Side, but everythng in this part of town is fancier than what we have on the South Side. I'm sure there is a most excellent reason for that which has nothing to do with race or economic status!
It doesn't matter. I like living on the South Side of San Antonio. It gets a bad rap, but I've lived there for years. If you aren't out looking for trouble its usually pretty quiet. Occasionally there is jackhole causing a ruckus. One time there was gunshots fired outside our house. We called police and the next morning when they came out as we found live rounds in the street, I asked what we can do if this keeps happening. He said, "What do you expect? You're on the South Side!"
Well thank you for being useless Einstein. I heard a joke there is no song called "Fuck the Fire Department" for a reason. Mind you I don't hate police, I used to work for 2 different police departments in the late 90s and early 00s. But I feel they should do their jobs and be held accountable when they don't Saying "this is the South Side," is dismissive and lazy.
Now, as I'm writing, I'm not sure what is happening to my far left, but there is a very loud noise like someone is dragging chairs back and forth and its really annoying. At least I'm in a comfotable, soft chair and not one of the hard seats sitting arouund here, I'm not sure my back could take it.
Though, whoever is making that noise is getting louder and louder really making me wish I'd brought my earbuds. I have a big feaux leather messenger bag. My wife calls it my man-purse. I could have easily fit the earbuds in there but just forgot. The one thing I could have really used. Go figure.
Maybe things will settle down. Once again, I thought libraries were suppose to be quiet. Now a little kid is screaming. Ugh, this is like a sensory nightmare! But I'm sharing my horror with all of you. Maybe I'll go back to the car after I finish this blog and take a nap. Maybe I'll try to read, but we'll see how I focuse. I'm almost donw with the Black Book of Manifestaion.
I also got my new glasses yesterday and I can see way better with them, but they also make my eyes kinda tired because they are stronger including my left eye which is weaker on its own than my right. So I get this weird fishbowl effect throughout the day. It comes and goes now but when its kicking in, my eyelids get heavy.
I don't mean to complain this whoel blog post. I'm more or less people watching and reporting than anything. Some stuff is just jarring is all. I try to keep things positive. I know this is another light weight post, but sometimes I just like to share what happens through the coure of my day. I type fast, so blogs don't take me more than an hour or so usually, sometimes less depending on the mental state at the time.
Tomorrow, I'll be watching college football and going to see Gold Steps and some other indie bands playing at a local music venue. That should be fun and I love supporting small bands. What kind of poeple watching do you like to do? Sound off in the comments!
